The organizer counts on the participation of around 12,000 athletes from 170 countries who will compete for 250 medals in 18 sports.
It was originally planned that the Universiade would be held in Brazil. This was the second time Brazil would host LSU. For the first time in Brazil, the Summer Universiade was held in Porto Alegre in 1963. However, on 23 December 2014, it was confirmed that Brazil withdrew from the event stating financial difficulties. The International Federation of Sports Associations has decided to reopen the tender, which has resulted in a new organizer of the Universiade – Italy (Naples and Calabria).
